FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE [Louisville, Ky, May 28th, 2025]

Slingshot, a leader in technology solutions, and New Roots, a pioneer in food justice, are teaming up to tackle fresh food insecurity in New Jersey. The partnership stems from Slingshot’s charitable Launch Initiative, a contest of which the winner is donated services to build a mobile app. New Roots was the inaugural recipient, allowing us to collaborate on the Fresh Stop Markets mobile app: a platform connecting underinvested communities with fresh, affordable produce through sliding-scale pop-up farm share models.

The expansion of this initiative is made possible by grants from the 2025 Harvest the Future grant, which is funded by the Tepper Foundation’s Food Security Access Fund and supported by the NJ Office of the Food Security Advocate, the NJ Economic Development Authority Atlantic City Food Security Grant Pilot Program, the NJ Food Security Initiative, and individual donors. This allows New Roots to update its Fresh Stop Markets mobile app to support multiple organizations. The app, which has already served over 2,200 people in Kentucky, will now be available in Atlantic City and Phillipsburg, New Jersey, with plans to expand to additional communities in the state and across the country.

A Model for Food Justice Across State Lines

“We are thrilled to see New Roots’ model take root in New Jersey,” said David Galownia, CEO of Slingshot. “This partnership shows how technology and community-driven solutions can come together to tackle fresh food insecurity head-on, and we’re honored to continue our partnership with the incredible team at New Roots.  It’s awesome this initiative started right here in Louisville.”

The New Roots Fresh Stop Market app has become a driving force for New Roots. It allows the nonprofit to efficiently manage its markets while connecting thousands of families to fresh, affordable, naturally-grown produce from NJ farmers. Next up: The app’s integration with SNAP Benefits. This will be especially groundbreaking, enhancing accessibility for families facing limited resources.

“This grant and the ability to expand the Fresh Stop Markets app is crucial in our mission to bring equitable food access to communities across New Jersey,” said Karyn Moskowitz, Founder and Executive Director of New Roots. “We’re excited to partner with Slingshot to replicate our successful model and empower more people to access the healthy, affordable food they deserve.”

New Roots Expand Partnership to Fight Food Insecurity in New Jersey

An Expanding Commitment to Food Justice

New Jersey’s government has demonstrated a strong commitment to addressing food insecurity, with initiatives like the Food Desert Act and the establishment of Feed NJ, an initiative of the NJ Economic Development Authority (NJEDA). This partnership builds on that momentum, offering a sustainable solution to food deserts while advancing policy goals for equitable food systems.

Looking Ahead

Slingshot and New Roots are poised to impact New Jersey’s food deserts significantly. They’ll leverage technology, community engagement, and policy support to transform the food landscape and improve the lives of thousands of individuals and families.
